One in five veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are diagnosed with PTSD. In addition, there is an increase in suicide, attempted suicide, and abuse rates among active duty service members. So what can healthcare providers do? This webinar will increase the knowledge of healthcare providers in the identification and care of patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, with special emphasis on preparing to assist those returning from active military duty as well as their families.
This is a Gannett Education CE event. Participants who attend the webinar and complete the post-test and evaluation survey will earn:
* Registered Nurses: 1.0 contact hour
* Social Workers: 1.0 Clock Hour

Julia M. Whealin, Ph.D. serves as a Clinical Psychologist and Research Health Scientist at the Veteran Affairs (VA) National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and as faculty at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine. Her work in the past fifteen years has focused on promoting wellness in Service Members, Veterans, National Guard/Reservists, and their family members. Her areas of expertise include psychological intervention for trauma, resilience/prevention, culturally-appropriate health care, promoting access to care, as well as deployment-related issues for Veterans and their family members. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Whealin oversees several federally-funded initiatives. Projects include a research program designed to promote understanding of barriers to mental health care in Veterans and National Guardsmen. A second program combines outreach, education, and research to overcome access issues specific to Veterans and their family members who live in rural areas. Dr. Whealin also serves on projects that evaluate innovative interventions, including those disseminated by telephone, cell phone, and the Internet. For example, she initiated and now oversees a project to provide therapy to Veterans and their family members who live in rural areas via video-teleconference. Dr. Whealin is a consultant to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and other federal and local state organizations. She contributed significantly to the development of educational interventions for Veterans, including the congressionally-funded DOD website, afterdeployment.org and the VA/DOD’s "Iraqi War Clinician's Guide." Additionally, she has published widely on a host of military-related mental health issues. Her recent books address the needs of military populations, and include Healing Stress in Military Families: Eight Steps to Wellness, The Clinician’s Guide to Treating Stress After War: Education and Coping Interventions for Veterans and Strategies for Managing Stress After War: Veteran’s Workbook and Guide to Wellness.
