Event Details

We Step Into The Light is a project, originally created by Dr. Desmonette Hazly, that promotes healing for survivors of sexual violence through art. The mission of the project is to use art to depict how survivors of sexual violence have grown from just "surviving" life to THRIVING in it. Through art, we celebrate the dreams, passions, ambition and beauty of "THRIVERS." Using THRIVER'S personal stories, We Step Into the Light educates communities and promotes healing and prevention-- powerfully, personally and effectively.

Thrivers see their most positive selves reflected in the beauty of the artists' creations, experiencing transformation and healing. The artist's creation is designed to reflect the thriver's strengths, resilience, beauty, talents, dreams and hopes for the future. Artists have the opportunity to meaningfully create, and with their unique talents, give to another. We Step Into the Light events and exhibits afford the artists exposure before broad communites, and use art as a powerful medium to promote awareness and education to prevent sexual violence.

At UC Irvine, we pair artists and thrivers to create works of art dedicated to depicting the resilience and beauty of the thriver. These pieces from various mediums will be display for one night only, February 27th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at Irvine's Center for Living Peace, in the University Town Center. It will be a night of performances, speeches, and, of course, art. Our goal is to show these thrivers and the community that within each of us is a light that cannot be extinguished by the trauma we experience. Join UC Irvine artists and thrivers as We Step Into The Light and prevent sexual violence!

UCI Campus Assault Resources and Education (CARE), Cross-Cultural Center at UCI, Women's Empowerment Initiative

UCI Campus Assault Resources and Education (CARE) supports the goal of providing an educational environment free from violence and discrimination. Guided by the values of respect for diversity, human rights and community responsibility, the CARE office provides comprehensive programs to serve those affected by sexual assault, relationship abuse and stalking. CARE offers counseling, advocacy, prevention education, leadership and training opportunities, while working closely with the community on collaborative response and policy development.

The Cross-Cultural Center at UCI is dedicated to creating and maintaining a socially just campus, fostering the cultural identities within our community, and providing opportunities for intellectual exchange, leadership development, and community engagement. As a team of professionals, students, and student organizations, the Cross-Cultural Center strives to create meaningful dialogues and interactive programs between and for all people, implement programs and services that foster a sense of social responsibility among students, and provide a network of support for students from traditionally disenfranchised communities. The CCC also aims to provide opportunities for community service and experiential learning in order to enhance the personal, social, cultural, and academic wellbeing of our students.

This Women's Empowerment Initiative is dedicated to the empowerment of the next generation of women leaders across the spectrum of activities in global society where they can increase their scope of influence, make distinctive contributions and take control over those factors within their realm of influence. While women leaders remain underrepresented in global leadership, the last decades of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century have seen the emergence of especially strong women leaders across all the domains of under-representation. At the University of California, Irvine the goals of this initiative are to connect women across generations, and to advocate and educate with the outcome of increasing the number of empowered women serving as the next generation of leaders in all areas of society.
