Lean & Hungry Theater presents a one-hour science fiction radio adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, directed by Hannah Todd. The time is the distant future; the place, far across the universe in the Naples Galaxy. Prospero and his daughter, Miranda, live on a small planet, where their spaceship crash landed after Prospero was ousted from his dukedom by his usurping brother. With only Miranda, the hideous alien Caliban, and a sentient computer program named Ariel for company, Prospero has waited for a chance to get his revenge on Antonio and his ally, the Queen of the Naples Galaxy. When Antonio and the Queen, along with the queen’s son Ferdinand, fly close to Prospero’s planet, he forces them to crash land by creating a cosmic tempest. Using his mastery of technology, Prospero sends everyone into a mad, hilarious dance – scheming brothers, buffoonish butlers, young lovers, aliens and computers all chasing each other around the plane – until he brings them all together for the final confrontation.

WAMU & Lean & Hungry Theater

WAMU 88.5 is the leading public radio station for NPR news and information in the greater Washington D.C. area. It is member-supported, professionally-staffed, and licensed to American University. Since 1961, WAMU 88.5 has provided programming to a growing audience that now totals more than 735,000 listeners in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.

Lean & Hungry Theater got its start in 2006 in Washington, DC. We use readers’ theater and radio drama to make Shakespeare make sense to audiences of all ages. We reach out to the community on our own, too, with special performances and workshops that get people involved in Shakespeare’s plays and what they’re really all about. Lean & Hungry brings professional readers’ theater to underserved areas. We’ll set up anywhere there’s space – to add to the educational and cultural enrichment of students, seniors, families and other interested groups in Washington, DC and beyond.
