WALKING WITH THE ENEMY, Mark Schmidt

USA / 2013 / 119 min / DCP / English

Inspired by a true story, WALKING WITH THE ENEMY follows the heroic lives of a world leader and a young couple swept up in the terror of World War II. Regent Horthy (Ben Kingsley), leader of his country, is faced with ceding power to his enemies or witnessing the execution of his people. During this national crisis, a young hero, Elek Cohen (Jonas Armstrong) emerges. Aided by the woman he loves, he confronts the enemy by becoming one of them. In a race against time to save his country, the Regent is forced to make difficult choices, while the couple embarks on a thrilling journey of love, courage, and sacrifice to save their families and thousands of others. This unforgettable film is sure to inspire and touch audiences.

After a private screening set up by the filmmakers for the FLIFF programmers, it was difficult to think of anything other than the film for hours into the day. The acting from the leads through supporting to even the hundreds of nameless extras is spot on and certain to create an inddlible image on the viewer. The production is massive with locations, special effects, costumes, sets, and period props. And the accumulative effect that Mark Schmidt, Randy Williams and the rest of the production team is simply masterful and an excellent memorial to the brave citizens who stood against seemingly impossible odds to defy the Nazis.
