This year our concert will begin with a beautiful choral rendition of the well loved Chinese instrumental piece, Moonlight Over the Spring River, arranged fairly recently by Wei Jin. Then we continue in choral works of the 20th century with 4 choruses on Poems of E.E.Cummings by Vincent Persichetti, and arrangements of 3 songs by Charles Ives. Moving over to the British Isles, we have a lovely 6-part ensemble of the English folk song, Early One Morning, followed by the humorous choral arrangement of the sea chanty The Drunken Sailor. Navigating back to North America, we present Tate’s arrangement of the negro spiritual Dry Bones, with the story behind the text coming from the Book of Ezekiel chapter 37. The Appalachian folk song Ev’ry Night When the Sun Goes In, also shows strong influence of the spiritual, and we conclude the first half of the concert with Mechem’s variation on the “play-party” tune Skip to My Lou.
In the second half we offer excerpts from Loesser’s musical based on the book of the same name by Abe Burrows How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. This is the success story of fictional character J. Pierpont Finch from a window cleaner to becoming the CEO of a world class conglomerate. Our presentation will focus more on the lighter moments in the office, with the indispensable love story between Finch and Rosemary.
