New York, NY
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
You're invited to join the national launch of the "Voices from Laos: Clearing Bombs, Protecting Lives" speakers tour on April 4th at the UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS. Legacies of War, the Permanent Mission of the Lao PDR to the UN, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), on the occasion of the International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, are supporting this groundbreaking national speakers tour about the legacy of unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination in Lao PDR -- a legacy that continues to impede economic development and claim lives 40 years since the bombs stopped falling.
Join us at this event to:
Listen to the compelling stories of Thoummy Silamphan, accident survivor and executive director of a Lao survivor assistance nonprofit, and Manixia Thor, a mother and deputy leader of an all-women's bomb clearance team
Gain a rich perspective on the UXO issue and how these deadly munitions affect lives and cause poverty
Learn about local and international efforts to clear bombs and save lives
- Hear remarks by Ambassador Saleumxay Kommasith, Permanent Mission of the Lao PDR to the UN, as well as representatives from UNDP and UNICEF
- Enjoy a light lunch and refreshments
This year marks 40 years since the end of the bombing in Lao PDR that began during the U.S. Vietnam War. To this day approximately 100 people are still killed by UXO accidents per year in Laos, 57 per cent of whom in the last several years have been children. More than 20,000 people have been killed or injured by UXO since 1973.
Following the event in New York, Voices from Laos, will travel to 11 cities around the United States. The tour will mobilize action and support for preventing UXO deaths, reducing contamination, and helping accident survivors.
When: April 4th, 2013, 1:15pm -2:30pm
Where: United Nations Headquarters, Conference Room 2, North Lawn Building
