Winter 2009 C.E. Meeting featuring Shannon Pigott, CVPM

One of less than 200 certified veterinary practice managers worldwide, Ms. Pigott has extensive expertise working within the veterinary profession: as a business consultant and coach, a practice manager, an accreditation consultant and curriculum design specialist for the American Animal Hospital Association, a learning and development trainer for Pfizer Animal Health, a speaker, and an author. Shannon is a graduate of both the Veterinary Management Institute at Purdue University and an executive coaching program at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Shannon is the founder and president of VetThink, Inc. She formed VetThink, Inc to serve unmet needs in the veterinary profession, including “people coaching for career performance and satisfaction” and an industry changing model for delivering pet wellness care by breed and genetic predisposition to disease. She is also the founder and co-owner of I-10 Pet Emergency, Inc., the first pet emergency management services organization in Texas to be owned by an individual nonveterinarian. In 2008, Shannon founded the Veterinary Managers of South Texas networking group in order to share best management and business practices.

9:00 to 9:30 am:  Registration & Refreshments

9:30 to 11:30 am:  Breed-Specific Health Care – A New Wellness Model (2 hours)

Importance of Session: Specificity breeds credibility. Dogs aren’t dogs anymore; they’re Golden Retrievers, Jack Russells, Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers, to name a few. As such, our practice shouldn’t be “dog” focused either. Rather, we should focus on enhancing healthcare and veterinary medicine by treating each dog according to its breed influence and building diagnostic and treatment plans accordingly. Having diagnostic and treatment plans for each breed and communicating the specific propensities of the breed will increase the credibility of the healthcare team and further build the bond between the client and the practice.

Session Content: This session includes information on how to set up a breed-specific wellness program. The financial benefits of making the transition and how to implement this transforming approach.

11:30 to 12:45 pm:  Lunch Buffet

12:45 to 2:15 pm:  The Wellness Paradigm (1.5 hour)

Importance of Session: Traditional approaches to wellness care fail to capture the attention and compliance from clients – yet wellness care holds tremendous opportunities for both patient health and the financial health of the practice!

Session Content: We must face the facts! There is a serious gap between what we view as wellness care and what our clients believe is important for the health of their pet. In 2008, clients reported spending $528 annually for toys, treats, vitamins, grooming and grooming products and food compared to $217 annually on routine veterinary care. If our services are so valuable, why are pet owners spending less on healthcare and more on novelties? This session includes specific steps practices can take to elevate the relative level of importance for preventive veterinary care in the minds of clients.

2:15 to 3:15 pm:  Your Personal Executive Coach - One Hour for the Rest of your Life (1 hour)

Importance of Session: Have you ever had a defining moment? A moment when the world you live in became crystal clear? Maybe you graduated from college, held your first child, opened the door to your new house or took the keys to your first practice? Powerful events like these drive our thoughts and values about what’s important in life.

Session Content: In this session, you will receive an hour long personal coaching experience where you will be challenged to consider where you are in your life and where you truly want to be. The awareness that is created will send you scurrying to start the next chapter in your life.

3:15 to 3:30 pm - Break & Refreshments

3:30 to 5:00 pm:  Understanding Your Business Economic Engine for Prosperity (1.5 hour)

Importance of Session: What drives a business’s economic engine? Is it a well oiled and efficient healthcare team? Maybe it’s your fee structure, how you package your services or your location? The current business performance of your practice is the direct result of your previous assumptions on economic drivers. Find out whether you are behind the wheel of a race car or a clunker.

Session Content: This session will challenge your thoughts on the current performance of your business by providing current financial benchmarks and trends for the future. The value of the session is having a clearer picture of your economic drivers and knowing how to improve your practice’s performance.
