Join us for a special video installation and live cinema performance by VJ Um Amel, an Egyptian-American digital artist, USC Ph.D. candidate, and the creator of R-Shief is an Arab media system that has one of the most rare archives of social media content from Arab revolutions. This event provides the audience with an interactive installation followed by an for an evening of world music synchronized to a remix of Egyptian cinema and media emerging from the revolutions across the Middle East and North Africa. Drawn from the databases of the R-Shief initiative, this installation pays tribute to the vision of the people.

More About VJ Um Amel

VJ Um Amel is a digtal artist, Ph.D. candidate, and the creator of R-Shief, a virtual lab that collects and analyzes content from the Internet using swarm computing. Her practices include live cinema performance, visual art, digital art, and network analysis. Focused on the Arab world, her doctoral work maps the recent revolutions through semantic analysis of media feeds in Arabic, Farsi, French, English, Spanish, German, and Urdhu. She has shown at the San Francisco MoMA, National Gallery of Art in Jordan, Camera Austria, Cultura Digital in Brazil, DC Fridge Art Gallery, @100COPIES in Cairo, Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History, The Levantine Center,+.

Previously, she has published poetry as Laila Shereen. Past awards include the ADC Jack Shaheen Media Scholarship, Porter College Graduate Research Grant, Florence French Scholarship, UC Regents' Fellowship, Puffin' Grant, and the Washington Peace Center Peace and Justice Award. With an M.A. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University and an M.F.A. in Digital Arts and New Media from University of California, Santa Cruz, this VJ is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Media Arts and Practice at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. There, she has been awarded an Annenberg Fellowship and nominated as a MacArthur Foundation HASTAC scholar. Recent interviews and reviews have been published in Egypt Independent, Fast Company, Science, The Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch, Al-Masry Al-Youm, the Digital Media and Learning, Art Territories, and The Creators Project.
