Morning Keynote: Designing for the Mind, David M. Hogue
How do we know that people perceive our designs the way we intend or that we have crafted the message and content appropriately? Understanding how people think, learn, remember, and feel can inform our design decisions and help make them better, but it also provides insight into our own choices, methods, and behaviors. Insights into motivation, cognition, and emotion shed light on how we all think and feel about design, whether we are the audience or the designer.

It's too easy to get stuck in the uninspiring routine of design sameness. Predictable results, based on a safe creative formula we find ourselves drifting towards too often. We justify it because it's proven, risk-free and we know the client will be comfortable with it. This presentation will encourage you to rock the design boat, jump into the creative waters and capsize your USS Mundane through practical creativity outside of your day to day client projects.

Visual Media Alliance (VMA) and VMA Education are nonprofit trade associations dedicated to providing a variety of benefits and money saving programs to creative, web, marketing and print businesses in Northern and Central California and Northern Nevada. We were formerly known as the Printing Industries of Northern California - PINC. Our purpose is to deliver what it takes to help our members become more successful and profitable in their businesses. To accomplish that goal, we provide personal and professional development programs for both owners and employees. Dues are based on each company's employee count.
The Alliance brings Business Services to small and medium media companies and even individual creatives who are typically underserved in insurance and discounted business services.

As a VMA member, you also belong to the Printing Industries of California (PIC), the state organization that represents you before state legislative and regulatory bodies and provides information and resources to help you comply in these arenas.
