Veterinary Assistant Training Program

Part 1 Tuesdays & Thursdays, Oct 15-Dec 12, 2013 6:30-8:30 pm
The student learns essential skills to help them keep animals healthy, care for them when they are ill, and assist veterinarians in the office.
Week 1: Introduction to Veterinary Laws and Ethics
Week 2: Communication and Client Relations
Week 3: Medical Terminology
Week 4: Animal Identification and Breed Identification
Week 5: Animal Restraint and Behavior
Week 6: Safety Concerns and Cleanliness
Week 7: Pet First Aid and CPR
Week 8: Euthanasia and Pet Ownership Responsibilities
Books required: Students are required to purchase two textbooks, available at Barnes & Noble Bookstore on the campus of Shawnee State University:
Learning Veterinary Terminology, 2nd, Edition, 2002, Douglas F. McBride
Tasks for the Veterinary Assistant, 2nd Edition, 2009, Paula Pattengale
The following textbooks will be provided: The American Red Cross Cat First Aid and Dog First Aid
Part 2 Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan 7 - Feb 27, 2014 6:30-8:30 pm
This course builds on the skills and knowledge of the Veterinary Assistant Training 1.
Part 2 of the program requires off-site labs, held every Thursday from 6:30-8:30 pm, at Shawnee Animal Clinic. Labs are only during Part 2 of this program.

Week 3: Diagnostic Imaging
Week 4: Patient Care and Small Animal Nursing
Week 5: Small Animal Dentistry
Week 6: Small Animal Surgical Preparation and Assisting
Week 7: Large Animal Procedures and Practices
Week 8: Putting It All Together and Making It Work
No new books will be needed for Part 2; the same books will be used again.
