Veterans Mean Business
Thursday, November 7, 2013 from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM (CST)
San Antonio, TX
The transition from military to civilian life presents a host of both challenges and opportunities, not least of which is deciding what your next journey will be. If you have a business idea and are interested in exploring the possibility of business ownership, than this is the workshop for you! Accion Women’s Business Center and NAWBO San Antonio are partnering with a team of experts to help you navigate the different paths available, options for funding your business, and successfully adapting to business culture.
This half-day workshop will consist of breakout sessions in small group settings, allowing you to engage in conversation with other veterans and address your questions and concerns with our resource partners.
Participants may select 2 of the 4 breakout sessions when registering. Be sure to arrive early so you can enjoy breakfast and visit with the many organizations committed to assisting our veteran community in San Antonio. Networking breaks between each session and after closing remarks will provide a chance for you to meet other veterans exploring or pursuing business ownership.
Options for Business Ownership
During this session, we will address the three paths you can choose to pursue when considering business ownership: building your own business from scratch, buying an existing business and purchasing a franchise. Learn which model best suits your needs, values and goals and compare the advantages and disadvantages that each model presents. This session is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of business ownership and understand what steps to take next.
Financing Your Business
For many, the financial component represents the most daunting aspect of business ownership. This session can help ease your concerns when it comes to access to capital. Learn about the special loans and certifications available exclusively to veteran business owners and why capital is such an essential part of your business success. If you have never applied for a business loan before, this session is essential to understand the core requirements and how to prepare before meeting with a lender.
Adjusting to the World of Business
Trading in your uniform for a suit or slacks and a polo shirt will likely be the least of your concerns when adjusting to your newly adapted work culture. During this session you will learn how to translate your skills and abilities to relevant experience, build your reputation and business contacts, and leverage your leadership skills to grow your business. Answering your questions about the do’s and don’ts of business culture and image portrayal are a few examples of topics that you can address in the confines of a learning environment during this session.
Obtaining certifications for your business can increase your competitive position in the marketplace, but how does one go about becoming certified and what benefits does it offer? This session will address those very questions. Learn about the various certifications for women, veterans, minorities, small business owners and the many government entities and organizations that are eager to do business with certified companies.
