SATURDAY, MARCH 16th
3:15pm: Connection, Connection, Connection: You, Your Partner, and The Music
Okay, be honest, why do you dance blues? It’s about the connection. This class is about you, your partner, the music, and the mechanics that bring them all together. Whether it’s your first night dancing or the end of your first decade, this class will help develop and refine the very thing that returns us to partner dancing time and time again: connection.
4:15pm: Filling the Empty
One of Blues Dancing's most distinguishing characteristics is its appreciation of the small, the in-between, the quiet. We'll learn to use breath, micro isolations, dynamic tone, and a true reveling in silence to fully utilize those hard-hitting breaks, those gushy between-the-beat moments, and the infinity of time and space we have between even the simplest of weigh-shifts.
5:15pm Breaking The Rules: A Creativity and Moves Class (advanced)
As masters of poetic movement, we have perfected the syntax of our art. But as many great writers like James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway have shown us, masters get to break the rules: alternate frames, leads revolving around follows, inter-partnership play, asynchronous movement, split weight. Where the beginners are barred, the masters get to play!
6:15pm Making Dancing a Conversation
Let’s redefine the conventional idea of lead-dominated dancing! We want to give follows the confidence, freedom, and skills necessary to properly bring varying degrees of input into their dance. The class is designed to transform typical, lead-driven, monologues into dynamic conversations. Conversations with give and take, listening and assertion, that build and deconstruct to a point where issues of lead and follow dissolve into connection and communication. This class goes beyond the theoretical and focuses on the variations in frame, tone, and muscle engagement that bring these concepts into reality.
SUNDAY, MARCH 17th
3:15pm: Exploring Open Connection
I know we all love hugs, but holding hands has its perks. This class will focus on the often neglected, under-appreciated, and super important (though perhaps admittedly somewhat inferior) open blues connection and the variety of moves that can only be done from open.
4:15pm: Cultural Innovation, Adaptation and Application: Traditional Movements to Electronica
Culture doesn't just manifest. It borrows, adapts, and innovates: synthesizing past into the present. We can see these sorts of dynamics in the electronic music scene with the emergence of generes like Electro-Swing, Tango Electronica, Tribal-Bass, Balkan-Beat, and many others. In this class we will take hold of these dynamics by applying movements we alreday know from blues, jazz, and tango to electonic music. "Now everyone Fish Tail..." **Wobble-Wobble-Wobble**
5:15pm Synesthesia: Making Your Dancing Psychedelic
Synesthesia: "definition: [sin-uhs-thee-zhuh] sensory confusion, as when the hearing of a certain sound induces the visualization of a certain color." Its 5am at the Sunday late-night, the days of sleep deprivation have taken their toll on your mental state, and suddenly something cracks. You begin to see the music; trebles turn yellow and sunburst while the baselines melt into earthy browns. Next comes touch; you begin to feel sound. The high staccato notes of the piano tickle and isolate high in your chest, the clarinet's playful meandering become a rolling wave in your stomach, and the image of your partner's ecstatic smile tastes of a salted mango Lassie… you have arrived in the world of dancer synesthesia!
6:15pm Dancer Polyamory: Dancing with Multiple Partners
Protestant values aside, this class explores the essentials and eccentricities of being “Poly”: communication, compromise, and strong personal foundations. This class will help develop the essential partnering skills used to dance and connect with one, two, three... or fifty partners at once.
