Bill Albert: How Quick Are We to Judge? A Case Study of Trust and Web Site Design

Have you ever wondered what happens when you first look at a website? Is it even possible to form an opinion about a website after looking at it for only 1/20th of a second? In this presentation Bill will share results from a recent study in which he examined how trust may be formed after only brief presentations of 50 popular financial and healthcare websites. It will also draw upon other research that investigates how opinions of other aspects of website design, such as visual appeal; can be formed after only brief exposures. Taken together, this research suggests that we process information about various aspects of website design at a pre-attentive or pre-conscious level, and this may have a significant impact for how we form long term impressions of websites and ultimately play a role in our decision making. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of what this means for website design and business strategy.

Bill Albert Bill Albert is Executive Director of the Design and Usability Center and Adjunct Professor in Human Factors in Information Design at Bentley University. Prior to joining Bentley, Bill was Director of User Experience at Fidelity Investments. He co-authored (with Tom Tullis) the first book on usability metrics, Measuring the User Experience: Collecting, Analyzing, and Presenting Usability Metrics, published by Elsevier in 2008. More recently he co-authored (with Tom Tullis and Donna Tedesco), Beyond the Usability Lab: Conducting Large-Scale Online User Experience Studies, published by Elsevier in 2010. He received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Washington and his PhD from Boston University. He completed a Post-Doc at Nissan Cambridge Basic Research.

Marc Resnick: How Motivated Reasoning Impacts User Experience

Life would be so much simpler if our customers would act in the logical way that we expect them to.  We go to great lengths to give them the information they ask for, and then they go and ignore it, acting in completely unpredictable and unexplainable ways.  Until now.  This presentation will share the results of a decade of research in cognitive and behavioral neuroscience that finally can explain what customers are really thinking and help us to design the most effective user experiences.  The presentation will include details from several fascinating studies and end with practical takeaways for business strategy and experience design.

Marc Resnick Marc Resnick is Professor in Human Factors in Information Design at Bentley University in Waltham, MA and Founder of Usability Solutions.  Prior to joining Bentley, Marc spent 25 years in Miami where he founded Usability Solutions, and served as Professor of Human Factors at Florida International University and as Director of the Pino Global Entrepreneurship Center’s Institute for Technology Innovation. He has worked with organizations of all sizes, including NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on the Space Shuttle Program and pre-launch startups in the tech sector.
