Event Details

This Utah Master Naturalist Deserts class will take place at Antelope Island State Park's Visitor Center on Saturdays, September 6, 13, and 20, and a weekend in Moab on September 26-28.  During our trip to Moab, we will be exploring and camping at Dead Horse Point State Park, and also spending time in the nearby National Parks!  Class times are 9am-5pm each day, with some earlier morning and late evening events during the trip to Moab.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at marklc@usu.edu.

While many of the upland systems in Utah, such as the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert, vary in plant and animals communities, they all share common features- low precipitation resulting in arid or semi-arid deserts, relatively high elevation, and climatic extremes including hot summers and/or cold winters. As a result, the plants and animals of these areas possess extreme adaptations for survival.  Come join us while we explore these systems and learn about how they function, the plants and animals that live there, and how they are managed.  Class size is small in order to maximize your opportunities for learning and having fun!

Each Utah Master Naturalist Program module consists of 40 hours of instruction, at least 60% of which is spent in the field.  Classroom and field activities will include instructor presentations, guest presentations on relevant resource issues, small group activities, and open discussions.

Due to the nature of the Deserts class, we will be walking and hiking over some uneven terrain, often in rocky environments.  While we do our best to accommodate people of all abilities, please contact Mark at marklc@usu.edu if you have any concerns.

There is an option to receive three (3) USU credits for an additional recording fee of $90.  All course materials will be mailed to you approximately two weeks before the class begins.  This will give you time to read them before the class starts, if you wish.

If you are unable to join us for any reason, we can refund your registration fee. Please let us know as soon as you can.  If registration is cancelled within two weeks of the start date of a class, a fee of $50 will be assessed to cover the cost of materials.
