You have a great product...but now how do you get people to use it? Not everyone experiences the overnight success of turntable.fm, Foursquare, or Facebook. In this full-day workshop, you'll learn the tools and techniques to effectively grow your user base.

This workshop will provide an overview of the latest user acquisition tools and techniques, as well as the guidelines you need to find the right user acquisition tool for your business. Topics to be covered include user acquisition best practices, fCommerce, gamification strategy, Google Adwords, and campaign optimization.

The content is geared toward web products and is highly relevant for any member of a young consumer-oriented web startup as well as anyone from a larger organization looking to foster the next step in their company's user growth.

  • In order to start a Google Adwords campaign using $100 of free Adwords credit, students should come prepared with a credit card or pre-paid credit card and a website to drive traffic towards. If attendees don't have a website yet, a tumblr or Wordpress site is fine for the exercise.


About the Instructors

Ryan Eberhard is currently the CEO of a stealth mode startup incubated by Science Inc in Santa Monica. Before coming to Science, Ryan ran the online business of Murad, a global women's skincare brand, which he modernized into a high growth and contemporary e-commerce and online marketing business in two years. Ryan has also run business development and product marketing teams at MyLife. He is a frequent guest lecturer on internet strategy and cloud computing at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Ryan received a BS in Logic and Computation and an MBA, both from Carnegie Mellon University. He is an rabid fan of ice hockey, scuba diving and the Santa Monica startup community.

David Oh is currently the Director of Acquisition at BeachMint. He is responsible for cost-effective acquisition of all new members, by testing, scaling, and growing various advertising channels and the creative direction and optimization of creative and acquisition funnels. In addition, he is responsible for social fCommerce strategy and execution, and has created a very unique experience on Facebook that integrates gamification elements with a complete social shopping experience. His team also specializes in very rapid prototyping, design, development, and execution of special marketing campaigns such as "CyberMint Live", which melded streaming live video on Facebook with a live shopping experience (also one of the first to use the open graph action "Watch").

A deep passion for quantitative based marketing and product development drives his professional interest and implementing technological and procedural infrastructure for analytics based marketing and product development is his specialty.

Joseph Hsieh is currently the COO at VisionNexus where he consults in social marketing and monetization of web traffic and Facebook applications. His first venture-backed startup, Sometrics, was acquired by American Express (http://tcrn.ch/pGk7Yl). Joseph's current industry focus is on social networking platforms (Facebook, OpenSocial,etc), long-tailed monetization methods, and gaming (social gaming, MMORPGs, casual/skill games.

Joseph subscribes to the famous words by Occam's razor: "entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem" - loosely translated to: "All things being equal, the simplest solution tends to be the best one."
