Fruited Lambics: Lambics have been made in Belgium for over 500 years, and we're honoring this tradition by brewing our own Indiana version. Upland lambic-style sour ales are fermented by wild yeast and aged in oak casks for over a year which creates a tart, complex beer. We then add whole berries, in this case blackberries, giving the beer enticing aromas and flavors. Once the fruit has been added, the beer is bottle conditioned, which adds a zesty and refreshing carbonation. Upland lambic-style sour ales are the perfect drink to share with friends over a plate of good cheese and fresh fruit.
VinoSynth White: Our friends at Oliver Winery have had a hand in our Sour Ale program since the beginning. The first oak barrels acquired by Upland were purchased from Oliver. Now, many years later, we are excited to present this collaboration between friends that represents our Sour Program full circle. This year we selected Vignoles as our white graphe varietal for VinoSynth White. Freshly harvested from the vine, we aged the grapes for three months in the barrel with Sour Reserve. The addition of Vignoles provides clean and crisp tropical fruit flavors and aromas.
VinoSynth Red: Our friends at Oliver Winery have had a hand in our Sour Ale program since the beginning. The first oak barrels acquired by Upland were purchased from Oliver. Now, many years later, we are excited to present this collaboration between friends that represents our Sour Program full circle. VinoSynth Red is a blend of 50% Sour Reserve and 50% Malefactor Flanders-style Red Ale aged on Catawba grapes. Catawba is a native North American variety, known for making jams and jellies, and distinctly juice, fruity, exotic wines. Malefactor was blended with Sour Reserve to develop more body, mild bourbon barrel character, and a layered acidity to complement the Catawba’s innate sweet, fruity notes.
Cauldron: The nature of brewing inherently involves the combination of ingredients to create that final well balanced beer. Inside this vessel resides on part Malefactor, Epic Flanders-Style Red Ale, and one part Dantalion Dark Wild Ale. These beers were blended and aged on northern Michigan Montmorency cherries. The melding of these two beers creates a complex sour ale with notes of spices, charred oak and copious cherry fruit character. Blended to be enjoyed by the alchemist in all of us.
Upland Brewing Co.
We’ve been brewing ales, lagers, and sours in Bloomington, Indiana since 1998. Many of our brews are unique twists on traditional recipes, while others are products of our own imaginations. We’re proud to say that several of our beers have brought home national and international medals and awards, but what we really care about is brewing the kinds of beer we like to drink, and providing a fresh local option to our communities. It never hurts to get a pat on the back, though! Along the way, we’ve made lots of friends and drank our unfair share of good beer, all while trying to do good in our communities and do well as a craft brewery.
