Date & Time
TUES July 30 | 7-8:30 PM
Doors open at 6:30 PM, program begins at 7.

Free and open to the public.

The fourth installment of the Building Peace and Justice Series centers on movement, monologue and music – telling the poignant story of war, trauma and family.

Unravelling Bill originally performed in 2006 uses monologue, dance, and original music to tell the story of Theresa, whose brother committed suicide after returning from military service in Iraq. Soldier suicide is unfortunately an increasingly relevant issue. In 2010, more soldiers committed suicide than lost their lives in combat. In sharing Bill and Theresa’s story, hopefully others might be helped. Originally performed in 2006 for Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble’s fifth season. Performed again in 2011 honoring the ten year anniversary of the US war in Afghanistan, then performed in 2012 as part of the Youspoke “Not Alone Festival“ for suicide awareness.

Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble is expanding Unravelling Bill to include more veterans and their families stories called Unravelling Veterans which illustrate a more complete description of veterans’ needs, presence, and the true cost of war. The Unravelling Veterans will show at Austin Park and Berger Park as a co-presentation with The Chicago Park District’s Cultral, Arts, & Nature Department.

Directed by Jack Ryan
Written & Choreographed by Ellyzabeth Adler
Music by Tim Hort and Andy Campbell
Performed by Jack Ryan, Ellyzabeth Adler, Lisa Leszczewicz, McKenna Liesman, Maren Rosenberg and Lauren Parets

Thank you to Theresa Blake and the Blake Family. Unravelling Bill is Dedicated to Sargent William Blake

“Unraveling Bill” performance will be followed by a facilitated conversation between a member of the ensemble, a mental health practitioner, a veteran and the audience. The evening will conclude with a light yoga session led by Danztheatre.

Jane Addams Hull-House Musuem is proud to partner with Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble (CDE) for the July 30th performance. CDE challenges, engages and inspires audiences both onstage and in the classroom, through innovative, multidisciplinary storytelling in the genre of Tanztheatre, which unites all art media and to achieve an all-embracing, radical change in humankind. As an Ensemble, we collaboratively create thought-provoking arts performances and educational outreach programs incorporating elements of theatre, music, movement, visual arts and literary text. We are dedicated to “performance with a purpose.”

Jane Addams Hull-House Museum

The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum serves as a dynamic memorial to social reformer Jane Addams, the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and her colleagues whose work changed the lives of their immigrant neighbors as well as national and international public policy. The Museum preserves and develops the original Hull-House site for the interpretation and continuation of the historic settlement house vision, linking research, education, and social change.
