GUEST SPEAKERS AND MENTORS

Richard AldersonRichard Alderson

Richard Alderson starts and invests in social ventures. He is the co-founder of UnLtd India, an incubator for social entrepreneurs in India; Journeys for Change, a social enterprise taking leaders to learn from the people changing the world; and Careershifters, which helps people find and start doing work they love. He's currently launching Impact DNA, a set of online tools to help social entrepreneurs and their teams make more impact in the world.

Derek Snook

After graduation, Derek Snook spent four months teaching at a school for orphans in a fishing village of Kenya. Upon his return, Derek decided to move into a transitional housing facility for the homeless in downtown Charleston. Through living there he noticed that most of the men worked day labor, thus Derek decided to work day labor himself. He saw that while many workers simply wanted to get their wages for the night, others were sincerely trying to get ahead in life. Together with a friend, Derek began researching the world of temporary labor and various forms of social enterprises. Nearly 18 months after the idea was first born, Derek opened the first IES Labor Services office, placing three workers a day with the City of Charleston. Today, IES Labor Services places more than 50 workers on a daily basis, and has added more than $100,000 to workers’ wages through the Hope Fund – that’s $100,000 more than those workers would make at another agency. Derek firmly believes that all anybody can ask of you is to live the story written for you as best as you are able, and to be honest about it. He embraces all that IES Labor Services represents because of the stories it tells and is proud to see his vision come to fruition.
