Celebrating its 25th year, National Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders. This year’s theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Speak Up, Reach Out,” encourages people to openly speak up about mental and substance use disorders and the reality of recovery, and promotes ways individuals can use to recognize behavioral health issues and reach out for help. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.
Our team at United Community Services and Franklin Family Practice wants to recognize and celebrate our clients in substance use and mental health therapy, those that support them and everyone in our community, by hosting an event, “Speak Up and Reach Out Day” on Saturday, September 27, from 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Starting at our 4908 Franklin Avenue location in Des Moines, the group will walk (about ½ mile) to Tower Park where we’ll have a park cleanup effort. Two guest speakers giving their recovery stories will follow this. We’ll wrap up the morning by planting a Recovery Tree honoring all of those in recovery and those who support their efforts. There is no cost to participate and all will receive a free t-shirt and light refreshments.
We welcome participation from the entire community in what we hope will become an annual event by participating, volunteering or by making a donation. United Community Services is a registered 501(c)3 so donations may be tax deductible.*
