The New Haven Chorale welcomes The Hartt School choruses, and The Hartt Wind Ensemble directed by Glen Adsit, for a thought-provoking, multi-media exploration of the rich common ground among Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Under the baton of Maestro Bolkovac, the assembled forces will perform luminous Baroque antiphonal works, excerpts from Bloch’s moving Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service), and the New England premiere of Yale composer Christopher Theofanidis’ powerful The Here and Now for large chorus and wind ensemble, a setting of Islamic texts by 13th-century Sufi mystic poet Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Balkhī, known as Rumi. Projected digital images, and vibrant instrumental works of Theofanidis, guest-conducted by Maestro Adsit, will complete this exploration.
