Understanding Mobile User Experience

Saturday, April 27th from 10:00 - 1pm
Joy Liu, Senior User Experience Designer, philosophie

Lunch will be included

Learn best practices in mobile UX. This workshop will explore the architecture and design of mobile systems as well as essential tools.
Mobile UX has risen to a level of importance on par with the desktop. Unlike desktop experiences, mobile UX can also be finicky, it demands high performance and is more room for error. Good touch interaction patterns are still emerging and only recently being adopted by users. Meanwhile back-end and front-end development is equally in flux. To understand the complexities of these systems, content and service providers require UX designers to document the creation process in way that is readable and useful. Regardless of who these duties belong to, at the end of the day the same methods and practices must be employed.

Student Takeaways:

  • Examine architecture of mobile systems
  • Look at current UI design patterns
  • Explore usability evaluation methods
  • Learn about issues facing native and web implementations, including hybrid and responsive design
  • Discover tools used to create UX documentation
  • Learn to implement a mobile strategy under a variety of contexts

Prerequisites: None.

About the Instructor

Joy Liu is a multimedia designer who mainly focuses on web-based product and application design. Joy graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design with an emphasis on interaction and packaging design. Despite her intentions to design consumer packaging for multinational brands, chance led Joy to find herself as the lead designer with Miso Media in early 2011. She fell in love with the fast pace of the tech world and the collaboration between design and development, and joined philosophie where she could extend her user-centered approach into crafting innovative strategies for digital brands and their products. Besides digital media, she also has good foundation training in traditional graphic design, typography, and archetype press.
