Understanding Age-related Macular Disease
Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 7:00 PM (PST)
Professor Bird’s research focuses on understanding the causes of inherited retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AM.D.) and developing potential new treatments for them. Areas of research include gene therapy where genes are introduced to correct the function of the gene causing the condition, in this case used for the treatment of early onset retinitis pigmentosa. The use of cell transplantation (transplantation of cells at the back of the eye) is also being developed to treat retinal diseases.
