On campus housing is available at Concordia Hall or at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center starting at $150/week.
SUMMER INSTITUTE FACULTY
Blair Bettencourt retired after 36 years as Music Director for Westford Academy and Music Coordinator for Westford, Massachusetts in 2006. He holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music Education from Lowell State College and also a Masters Degree in Performance with an emphasis in Conducting from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. He is former Director and Conductor of The University of Massachusetts, Lowell Preparatory Division Wind Ensemble, the University Concert Band and Assistant Conductor and Personnel Director of The Lowell Summer Concert Band. Mr. Bettencourt has been Adjunct Faculty Member at The University of Massachusetts, Lowell since 2001 where he has taught woodwind pedagogy, elementary instrumental pedagogy, music technology and conducting. He also serves as supervisor of music student teachers. Mr. Bettencourt maintains an active schedule as a private teacher and as a performer on clarinet and saxophone. He has appeared at jazz festivals including The Globe Jazz Festival, The Kool Jazz Festival, The Essex Jazz Festival and The Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. He can be heard as a performer on Jazzology and Stomp-Off records. Mr. Bettencourt has been very active as a member of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association serving in a variety of positions, including District Band Manager, Secretary and Chairperson of the Northeastern District. He is a 1990 recipient of the M.M.E.A. Lowell Mason Award recognizing his contribution to Music Education in Massachusetts. He is a member of Music Educator's National Conference and the National Band Association.
Thomas B. Malone is a composer, educator, and scholar with an interest in traditional music and pedagogies outside the mainstream. Originally from Vermont, Tom attended New England Conservatory studying Music Education with Richard Colwell, classical composition with Robert Didomenica, and was a teaching assistant at the Intercultural Institute from 1997-2002. He received his Masters and Doctoral degrees from Boston University and has taught all levels of public school music and has served as a clinician at MMEA, NYSSMA, and at the National Meeting of NAFME in Washington DC. His research involves pedagogy and praxis of world traditions including Caribbean, African, and American Rural music with a focus on Ugandan Music, the African roots of the Banjo, and Shape-note Singing as a culture of musical praxis. With the help of friend and colleague Moses Buyondo, Tom is developing "Madinda Nation" a music education initiative using East African-style mallet instruments and ensemble skills to bridge musicians and learners at the classroom college and community level through participatory music making and instrument building.
Vocalist, conductor, and arranger Mimi Rohlfing is a member of the music faculty at University of Massachusetts-Lowell where she teaches voice and choral ensembles. Most recently she was on the faculty at Columbia College Chicago where she founded the award-winning vocal jazz ensemble 3CVJE, and was the 2010 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching award. Rohlfing has taught general music at Sudbury's Ephraim Curtis Middle School and at Brookline's William H. Lincoln Elementary School, where she also worked with PALS (Performing Artists at Lincoln School). Under her direction, 3CVJE was a frequent performer with Jon Faddis and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, and sang with Paquito D'Rivera, Darmon Meader, Paula Cole, Claudio Roditi, Mark Murphy, New York Voices, Cyrus Chestnut, and Christian McBride, among others.
Rohlfing’s varied musical tastes have taken her around the world: she’s sung classical music in such venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Royal Albert Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall, the Edinburgh Festival, and the European Choral Grand Prix in Varna Bulgaria. A Downbeat award winner, she’s sung jazz from Lincoln Center, to Capetown South Africa’s Green Dolphin Jazz Club, to Chicago’s Jazz Showcase. She's conducted honor choirs and vocal jazz workshops in the United States and in Europe. After earning her Bachelor of Music in Performance and Music Education at Berklee College of Music, she received her Master of Music degree in Jazz Vocal Performance from Western Michigan University.
Meg Ruby is a classically trained concert pianist, certified yoga instructor, and sound/music healer. She integrates her grounding in classical music training and her extensive performance and teaching experience with a deep passion and knowledge of yoga and healing. Meg shares her insights with other musicians and offers to help guide them on their own journey of musical self discovery.
Meg is currently a professor of piano at University of Massachusetts- Lowell. She performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist throughout the world. She has given masterclasses and workshops at The Eastman School of Music, Arizona State University, University of Hawaii, University of Cuenca-Ecuador, Bowling Green State, Steinway and Sons, at various camps, community music schools and various music teachers associations.
S. Alex Ruthmann is Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Massachusetts Lowell where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses at the intersection of music, education and technology. Prior to his appointment, he served on the music education faculty at Indiana State University and taught general music at Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He currently serves as President of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction, Past Chair of the Creativity special research interest group of the Society for Research in Music Education, as Co-Editor of the International Journal of Education & the Arts, and serves on the editorial/advisory boards of the British Journal of Music Education and Journal of Music, Technology, and Education. His current research explores new media musicianship, computational creativity, the creative processes of audio engineers and producers, and the development of music technologies for use in school- and community-based programs for children.
