Event Details

Event Summary:

The Entrepreneurship Summit, hosted by Rice Launch, is a multifaceted event providing a variety of channels for Rice University University of Houston, and University of St. Thomas undergraduates, graduates, and MBA students to indulge and explore their entrepreneurial interests. Featuring a pitch competition, intimate networking opportunities, and a wide selection of workshops, panels, and speakers, participants will be able to allocate their time flexibly between activities in order to attend the activities that most engage them. Participants are organized into teams based on mutual interest in a particular field and paired with a mentor who is an expert in that field. Throughout the day, as teams learn from the workshops and lectures they attend, they will develop their product concepts, business models, and pitches in preparation for the two-round pitch competition in the evening. Overall, the Summit is a high-energy introduction to entrepreneurship at Rice and an ideal entry point for students of all interests, skills, and backgrounds to begin or continue their involvement with entrepreneurial ventures both on and beyond campus.

Programming Slots:

The programming slots represent the area of greatest flexibility in the schedule, giving the participants free rein to determine the type and extent of their involvement. During each of the four Programming Slots, participants may either attend one of the lectures, workshop/crash course, or panels being presented that time, or they may devote the period to working on their pitch with their mentor and other members of the pitch team.

Students who choose to attend a presentation will have a wide range of opportunities. Ideally, each forty minute Programming Slot will feature, at minimum, one workshop/crash course, one lecture, and one panel (the same programming may be offered in multiple Programming Slots, giving more students the opportunity to attend). Workshops/crash courses like “This is How You Raise Capital” or “This is How You Design a Mobile App” will be practical, hands-on learning experiences designed to teach a specific, tangible, applicable skill. Lectures will feature guest speakers telling stories of personal successes and failures, anecdotes, advice, or any other content suggested by the presenters we recruit. Panels will be composed of high-profile entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and other important figures in the Houston business scene participating in a moderated discussion on certain topics with significant time dedicated to answering student questions.

For the participants who decide not to attend programming during any one of the Programming Slots, we encourage them to use that time to developing their product ideas and preparing their pitch for the competition later in the evening.

Final Presentation:

  • 90 seconds
  • Focus on the idea/product
  • Presenting to an audience composed of all participants, mentors, speakers, and facilitators, as well as specially invited entrepreneurs and business people from the greater Houston community
