Shane Jimerson, Ph.D.

Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara

President of Divsion 16 (School Psychology) of the American Psychological Association

With over 250 publications, Shane is currently the editor of the School Psychology Quarterly (APA) journal, the lead editor of the Handbook of School Violence and School Safety: International Research and Practice 2nd Edition (2012, Routledge), co-editor of Best Practices in School Crisis Prevention and Intervention 2nd Edition (2012, National Association of School Psychologists), lead editor of the Handbook of Bullying in Schools: An International Perspective (2009, Routledge), lead editor of The Handbook of International School Psychology (2007, SAGE Publishing), the lead editor of The Handbook of Response to Intervention: The Science and Practice of Assessment and Intervention (2007, Springer Science), and co-author of Promoting Positive Peer Relationships: Bullying Prevention Program. 

Having received numerous awards for his scholarship, including the Society for the Study of School Psychology, the National Association of School Psychologists, the American Educational Research Association, and the Division 16 (School Psychology) of the American Psychological Association, his scholarship continues to highlight the importance of early experiences on subsequent development and emphasize the importance of research informing professional practice to promote the social and cognitive competence of children. 

Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet, PPSC, LCSW

Gloria has been a school social worker, educator, program developer, and university lecturer since 1981.  She is a strong believer in the importance of working with teachers, parents, and students to create a safe environment conducive to learning. Her areas of expertise include: fostering resiliency in children; bullying and cyber-bullying prevention; and educating children and youth to be ethical and responsible digital participants.

Vicki is an expert educator and program consultant and seasoned facilitator with over twenty-five years of experience working with youth, schools, and communities  throughout the United States and abroad.  She’s on a mission to make schools safe, peaceful and bully-free.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Certificates of Attendance
We will offer 6 hours of CEUs from the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to those who attend both morning and afternoon sessions. You must sign in for both the morning and afternoon sessions to receive a CEU certificate.  Please note that no partial credits will be given.  We cannot yet offer CEUs from APA or from NASP.  Attendees will be given a certificate of attendance at the end of the day.


Presenters will discuss research about and practical strategies for preventing schoolyard and cyber-bullying from Kindergarten to 12th grade, with the ultimate goal of promoting students' academic and socio-emotional success. Special attention will be paid to promoting positive peer relationships, safe school environments, and responsible technology use. 


Shane Jimerson, Ph.D.

Bullying is the focus of a large body of research that can help inform educational practice.  Shane's presentation will highlight recent research on bullying and emphasize the importance of social-ecological factors in promoting pro-social behaviors. Key findings on the relationship between bullying, social skills and academic outcomes will be explored. The presentation will close with a discussion of an empirically based curriculum designed to promote positive peer rlationships in schools.  


Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet, PPSC, LCSW

By the time children enter kindergarten, they are already “digital natives,” fluent with the media skills to play games, use Smartphone apps, and Skype with friends. Helping children and teen clients develop critical and ethical reasoning skills to become 21st century consumers and producers of technology is paramount.


This presentation will explore the risks children and teens are taking in today’s 24/7 digital world. It will help school psychologists see the power and responsibility associated with “Living out Loud”. Through interactive discussions and videos participants will explore the following topics: 

  • Digital drama and cyberbullying
  • Online risky behavior
  • Digital reputation


Participants will leave with the following:

  • An understanding of the benefits and challenges of living in the digital age
  • A recognition of online risk taking
  • Facebook depression and other psychological responses to social networking
  • Strategies to support children and teen clients to look critically at their online lives
  • Strategies for prevention and intervention


Vicki Abadesco

The final session will engage the audience in an interactive presentation on bullying in schools. The audience will participate in a discussion about individual bullying experiences and ways we can improve school climate through helping children create healthy relationships, resolving conflicts and making good choices. Vicki willl close with a discussion of a widely used and highly effective anti-bullying strategy that addresses bullying and harassment and that supports diversity at your school.
