The Science Takeover
PERV: A Science Author Salon
with Jesse Bering Ph.D psychologist, award-winning columnist, and author of Why is the Penis Shaped Like That?
The Welcoming Committee is joining forces with the Museum of Science to present a different take on the seemingly stodgy institution of science. Welcome to PERV: A Science Author Salon where Jesse Bering Ph.D, discusses the science of sexuality while we sip on Deep Eddy cocktails in a swanky Cambridge furniture shop. This is science with a TWC twist.
If the science of sexuality has taught us anything over the past few decades, it’s that human beings have little—if any—conscious control over what arouses them. Explore the lives of a woman who falls madly in love with the Eiffel Tower, a young man addicted to seductive sneezes, and an octogenarian who derives pleasure from pretending to be a baby. We’ll pull back the curtain on the history of perversions, discuss the latest research on desire, and discover the biological reasons behind our distaste for unusual sexual proclivities. In Perv: The Sexual Deviant in All of Us Bering challenges us to move beyond our judgments and attitudes toward “deviant” sex and accept our true natures. Deep down, we are all sexual deviants in one form or another. If we stop asking what is “normal” and “natural,” and instead ask what is harmful; discussing the more puzzling aspects of sexuality may increase our understanding of humanity and improve society as a whole.

The Welcoming Committee is a movement of people who think it's time for LGBTQ folks to experience every bar, sports game, event, venue and major travel destination the same way straight people do. We recreate the comfort of being at a gay bar everywhere we go through critical mass.
