Speaker Bios:

Nur Kilic, chocolatier of 25 years. Owner of Serenade Chocolatier in Brookline. Originally a mechanical engineer in power systems in the Far East division of General Electric. She switched careers to pursue her passion in chocolates.

Filiz Garip is Associate Professor of Sociology at Harvard University. Her research lies at the intersection of migration, economic sociology and inequality. Within this general area, she studies the mechanisms that enable or constrain mobility and lead to greater or lesser degrees of social and economic inequality. Filiz is currently working on a book, which will characterize the diversity of the Mexican migrant population in the United States. At Harvard, she has taught courses on migration and economic sociology, and has won the George Kahrl Excellence in Teaching Award. Filiz received her Ph.D. in Sociology and M.S.E in Operations Research & Financial Engineering both from Princeton University. She was awarded the Harold W. Dodds Honorific Fellowship at Princeton, and was part of the Woodrow Wilson Society of Fellows. Filiz holds a B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul.

Burcu Gulec is a musician and an educator. Burcu was born in Ankara and performed her first stage experience at the age of 9. She has performed internationally including several appearances in programs under Turkish National Radio Television and Ankara Radio broadcasting directly to Europe and U.S., also with the Jazz Orchestra of Turkish Stars of Harmony (TÜRKAY) and performed at International Jazz Festivals in Turkey. She worked on a self­‐developed project on “Use of Music for Acceleration of Language Development in Deaf and Hard­‐of­‐hearing Children”, receiving admission from Hacettepe University, Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Educational Audiology for Master Program. She has recorded several works internationally, including Jazz Revelation Records in Boston, MA. Currently she is enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA as a scholarship recipient.
