An overpowering internal sense that the balance, order, place, frequency or position of something is disturbed and must be corrected.   It can be the spoken or written word, touch, feel, sound, or smell of something that is not 'just right.'  The individual with 'just right' OCD often performs endless repetitions of ordinary tasks out of frustration that they are not 'perfect' or 'just right.'  Touching and tapping, symmetry, ordering and arranging, perfectionism and counting can all be part of the rituals related to 'just right' OCD

Up Close and Personal With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
A story by the Tulsa Swim Co-Race Director

At 32, I have seen countless doctors, tried multiple types of treatment, and have yet to be cured. However, I know there is no cure, and in my lifetime there never will be. I have what is called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD. I have struggled with OCD as long as I can remember.

My OCD consists of checking, rapid thoughts, and perfectionism. I used to check the alarm clock roughly 40-50 times per night. I didn’t have to just check it so to speak. I had to make sure it felt right on my finger when checking it. In my mind, it had to be perfect. My thoughts are consistently rapid. Many people can say that nothing is on their minds. I however constantly have thoughts racing through my head so fast that I cannot keep up with them. My perfectionism is broad but mainly covers anything from athleticism to worrying about how my body may look to others to goals in life. If I am not 100 percent on any of these, I take things out on myself. An example would be that I will workout on no sleep because I am disgusted with myself.

What does all of this mean? It means that we as individuals need to find help for those with OCD. Out of roughly 20 doctors in my life, I have come across 2 that were good for me. The Peace of Mind Foundation has helped me find a great doctor. The quote “Stomp out the stigma” simply means that we are tired of people being made fun of with OCD. We just struggle a little bit. That doesn’t make us different people. Swim your hearts out! It is what makes me happy on a daily basis. If I didn’t have swimming, my OCD would be much worse.
