Teachers for Social Justice: Deaf* Learners (TSJDL) Script

Hi, I am Laurene Simms. TSJDL was formed at the recent 2013 Deaf People of Color conference in Washington, DC. TSJDL aims to promote the practice of Social Justice in the area of education for d/Deaf and hard of hearing students including their Intersectionality, schools and within the Deaf community . We had many interested participants attend our seminar and it was truly positive. However we acknowledge we have a lot of work to do.

Hi! I am Carla García-Fernández. We, TSJDL, are excited we will be hosting the very first Preschool- 12th grade teacher retreat next year, Sunday, August 3, 2014 to Sunday August 10, 2014 at the Alma de Mujer for Social Change Retreat Center in Austin, TX. ((Short video clip of the retreat center)) Video Description: 1. Green grass with rows of trees in front of a suite, 2. Medicine Wheel Garden, 3. Platform on the grass between the trees.

Photo Descriptions: 1.Gray colored statue in honor of first director, Marsha A. Gomez blue earth in her lap and pond in the background, 2. main lodge behind the trees, 3. outdoor patio with picnic table, 4. dining room with long wooden table and chairs, 5. office space with a small sofa and a desk, 6. full room with three couches, 7. one of suites with twin bed near the window, 8. blue sign "Alma de Mujer- Center for Social Change.

Hi! I am Doralynn Folsé. During this one week retreat fifteen teachers will gather at a beautiful and peaceful environment to examine equity and social justice issues in the teaching of Deaf learners. Teachers will explore and unpack their beliefs, biases and privileges. They will reflect and view these issues collaboratively through a variety of lens and perspectives in a supportive and empowering learning environment. This will be done through in-depth daily discussions and a variety of instructional activities (which you will be able to use later with your students). We will provide teachers with a wealth of resources: curriculum, articles, learning activities, etc. Teachers will also look into pedagogy, analyze curriculum and discuss institutional practices. You will return from this retreat with a foundation for professional networking and while teaching we provide mentorship to support your social justice teaching careers.

(Carla) If you are interested in participating in this retreat, there is a criterion. 1. You need to have a minimum of 3 years as a Preschool-12 teacher working directly with students. 2. You will be able to stay for the whole week at the retreat. 3. You need to attend all seminars each day. 4. You will be able to communicate in ASL since interpreters will not be provided.

(Laurene) To participate in the retreat, it will cost $1,000, which will cover housing, meals/snacks, transportation from and to airport and retreat materials and curriculum handouts.

(Doralynn) Laurene just explained the $1,000 fee. We are well aware that teachers do not earn much. If you are in need of financial support we do have sponsorship funds available. On the application under the fee section you can designate the amount you need - $100, $250, $500 or the full $1,000. Provide an explanation of your specific situation or need. If you have any questions, feel free to reach us at TSJDL13@gmail.com. We look forward to receiving your application! The application form can be found on the TSJDL Facebook page. Fill it out and send it to us. We will see you in August 2014 at our First Teachers for Social Justice Retreat!!!
