Sanspointe Dance Company announces the line-up of new dance, music and video created by local and national artists in their upcoming concert entitled, Trip the Light. The company has invited Eric Yow of the Orlando-based troupe Yow Dance and Lynda White from Denver to set repertory pieces on them. They have also included Linze McRae from the Downtown Dance Conservatory in Gadsden, AL to collaborate with Artistic Director, Taryn Packheiser Brown, on a dance for the camera media project. Rounding out the performance are new dances by company members Sara Turney, Chelsea Henderson and Brown. Music Director, Justin Wallace, will also premier two audio compositions in conjunction with the aforementioned works of art.
The title Trip the Light comes from the metaphor of a light representing an inchoate idea or form that needs to be ripened in order to come to fruition. Brown also stated “it represents the physical footlights that once lined the front of old vaudeville stages.” “There will be a loose theme of both the presence/absence of technology within the overall design of the show. However, each piece stands on its own and the concert can be approached as an evening of several small works contributed by various artists.” Repertory pieces for the show include Eric Yow’s Purcell, a classical modern dance set to baroque music by Henry Purcell and Lynda Whites’ Punchy Muffle, a humorous dance theater piece with edgy music by Greg Tanner Harris. The company hopes to show their wide range of contemporary dance abilities by performing these disparate works from national guest artists.
Sanspointe is thankful to be working with Linze McRae and the Downtown Dance Conservatory on Demeter’s Folly, a new work made for video. The piece was shot on the banks of the Coosa River, Broad Street Bridge and the Martin Wildlife Park in Gadsden, AL. McRae collaborated with Brown on the choreography and artistic design for the piece. The dance is based on the story of Persephone and her betrothal to Hades, but from the perspective of her mother, Demeter. Sara Turney will present a new solo, which she describes as “soft, reaching, lifting, (with) wings.” Chelsea Henderson’s female trio utilizes large stage props and diaphanous decorative skirts and original music by Wallace. Taryn Packheiser Brown premiers a new solo with experimental sound and video projections.
Trip the Light was made possible by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Tickets for the concert are $15 and can be purchased at http://www.sanspointe.eventbrite.com. Performances will take place on November 14th and 15th at 7:30pm and November 16th at 2pm at the CDF Studio Theatre at 1715 27th Court South, Homewood, AL 35209. The show will be general seating.
