2015 marks the 100th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninoff's choral masterpiece, The All-Night Vigil. In commemoration, Ballets Russes Arts Initiative presents a special performance of this enthralling and influential achievement of modern sacred music interpreted by the choir of Trinity Church of Boston, together with 14 professional singers. The performance will also include pieces by two earlier composers, Dmytro Bortnyansky and Piotr Tchaikovsky.
The 90-minute concert takes place at the beautiful Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, also known as Mission Church, home to a 19th century copy of a 15th century Byzantine icon in Rome whose custodians are the Redemptorist order.
Prior to the performance, at 6:30 pm, BRAI Executive Director Anna Winestein will give a free talk in the Parish Hall of Mission Church about the Vigil, the history of secular Russian composers creating sacred music, and Rachmaninoff's legacy in the US. Watch a video of a variant of the lecture here.
