TribU: Chicago River Wildlife Cruise.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Join the Chicago Tribune’s outdoors columnist Barbara Brotman and her guests, Mark Hauser, education manager of Friends of the Chicago River and Geoff Williamson, a bird expert from the Chicago Ornithological Society, on this chartered boat ride down the South Branch of the river to learn what kind of creatures live in and around the river -- and hopefully to see some, too. Bring binoculars and your curiosity! If you joined us for our first cruise along the North Branch in June, you won’t want to miss this encore outing.

Refreshments available on board. Please arrive by 7:50 a.m., the boat will depart at 8:00 a.m.

$40, 8 a.m. departure at the Wendella dock at 400 N. Rush St. (The Lower Level of Rush and Kinzie at Trump Tower).

Please note, we go out rain or shine. We do not offer refunds based on weather.

Barbara Brotman, the Tribune’s outdoors adviser, has biked through snowstorms, rock-climbed on a lakefront wall of doubtful legality and since creating the column in 2004 has hiked, kayaked and birded throughout the Chicago area, learning from experts all the way. She is winner of the 2013 Chicago Audubon Society award for environmental writing. She also writes a Page 2 column on Mondays dealing with a wide range of personal and public issues, and is a staff writer focusing on in-depth stories. She grew up in Queens, N.Y. when it was still so undeveloped that she picked wild blackberries in a forest behind her apartment complex. She now lives with her husband, Chuck Berman, a Chicago Tribune photographer and devoted birder, in Oak Park.

Mark Hauser has worked for Friends of the Chicago River since 2007. He attended Ohio State University, where he graduated with an M.S. in natural resources with a focus on environmental education and interpretation. He has experience leading service-learning projects with AmeriCorps; having partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency and New York/New Jersey Baykeeper to clean and monitor the heavily impacted Second River in Newark, NJ; and restoring habitats all across New York City in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department. He was a naturalist/educator at Spring Brook Nature Center just prior to joining Friends of the Chicago River. He is an Eagle Scout, a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Mali, 1990-1992), and a Certified Interpretive Guide. At Friends of the Chicago River, he aids teachers to integrate the Chicago river into their classrooms. He teaches workshops, presents classroom lessons, leads outdoor field trips in the river, and organizes the annual Chicago River Student Congress every February.

Geoff Williamson has been interested in birds since the age of eight. He is co-editor of the Illinois-Indiana regional reports in North American Birds, the journal of ornithological record published by the American Birding Association. He serves as vice-secretary of the Illinois Ornithological Records Committee, chairs the Illinois Ornithological Society's Ornithological Research and Data Committee, and received the Ludlow Griscom Award of the American Birding Association, given for outstanding contributions to regional ornithology. He has led more than 400 bird watching field trips, many in Chicago's Lincoln Park. When not birding, he plays ice hockey and works as an electrical engineering professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Cornell University.

Chicago Ornithological Society is a Chicago area birding club offering field trips, programs, and other events for everyone who wants to learn and enjoy birds in the company of birders from novices to experts.  www.chicagobirder.org
