Join the Tribune’s Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Mary Schmich and nation/world editor Kerry Luft in an evening seminar that will guide you in writing your personal story, whether it is about your parents, your children or your own unique experiences. Learn how to get started, how to choose a topic and more. Space in this class is limited

Note: This seminar will include time for Q&A, but will not include any one-on-one critique. Before the seminar, please consider what you would like to write about so there are a few ideas already in your head.

Mary Schmich is a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for the Chicago Tribune, where she also has worked as a features writer and national correspondent. Her column appears on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Mary wrote the “Brenda Starr” comic strip for 25 years before deciding to give it up to spend time learning mandolin. She plays the piano and teaches yoga. With her colleague Eric Zorn, she hosts Songs of Good Cheer, an annual holiday sing-along at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Raised in Georgia, she has lived in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts and France.

Kerry Luft is the Nation & World editor of the Chicago Tribune, where he has worked since 1985

From 2009 to 2011, he was the Tribune Company's bureau chief in Washington DC, overseeing the work of two dozen reporters and editors and providing coverage for Tribune’s eight newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, Hartford Courant, Orlando Sentinel, South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Allentown (Pa.) Morning Call and the (Newport News, Va.) Daily Press.

He also has served as the Chicago Tribune’s associate managing editor for national and foreign news and deputy metropolitan editor, among other leadership roles. In the mid-1990s he was a foreign correspondent based in Brazil, covering all of South America.  While there, he was part of a reporting team that was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize.

He is a frequent lecturer on journalism at local colleges and universities and also has spoken to journalism conferences in China and Italy. He is a graduate of Northwestern University.
