Event Details

Celebrate the District's Emancipation Day a few days early with a tour of Frederick Douglass' home and the surrounding grounds!

City of Trees author Melanie Choukas-Bradley will lead a tree tour at the historic Anacostia home of Frederick Douglass, renowned 19th century abolitionist and women’s rights advocate. The tree tour will immediately follow a 9:30 house tour of the Cedar Hill home where Douglass, who was born a slave on Maryland’s eastern shore, spent the happy and productive final years of his life.

The Douglass home is a National Park Service Historic Site and it overlooks the Anacostia River and the city of Washington. Many venerable trees grace the scenic property including several species of oaks and hickories, white ash, hackberry, and southern magnolia.

Getting There

The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site is located at the corner of 15th Street SE and W Street SE. Parking and bike racks are available on site. Detailed driving and biking directions available here

The closest Metro station is the Anacostia Metro Station, which is located on the Green Line.  From the Anacostia Station, take the B2 bus in the direction of Mt. Ranier.  There is a bus stop directly in front of the Douglass home, at the corner of 14th and W streets. Continue along the sidewalk in the direction the bus is traveling until you reach the visitor center.  The B2, 90, U2, 93, A42, A46, A48, P1, P2, and P6 Metrobus all drop off within 2 blocks of the site. However, be aware that Metrorail and Metrobus schedules may vary on weekends and that weekend track work may affect travel.

We will meet at the visitors’ center at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site between 9 and 9:15 a.m. The house tour begins at 9:30 and there is a short climb up the hill from the visitors’ center before the tour.
