Event Details

Join Casey Trees to explore Fort Bunker Hill in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, D.C.! This earthen fortification, built as part of the Civil War defenses of Washington, is now a National Park that is home to a diverse tree canopy that includes chestnut oak, sassafras, black gum, and back cherry.

We will walk and climb some of the park’s short trails to discuss and identify native tree species and enjoy whatever fall color is on display. Despite encompassing only one city block the park serves as an important stopover point for migratory birds, which we may get a glimpse of during the tour.

Getting There

The closest Metrorail station is Brookland-CUA (Red Line) which is a 15 minute walk from the park. The Metrobus stop is near the intersection of 14th & Otis St NE (served by the H6) or at the Brookland-CUA Metro station (served by the H2, H4, H8, G8, R4 and 80). On Sundays there is no street parking allowed on the border of the park but street parking is available on the blocks adjacent to Fort Bunker. The meeting location will be at the Fort Bunker Hill sign on the corner of 14th and Perry Streets NE.
