Presentation Tending to the Healer: Promoting the Mentalizing Stance When Treating Trauma

Describe the nature of mentalizing, and how mentalizing impairments derive from early parent-child interactions and disruptions in attachment relationships.

Recognize the role a mentalizing stance can play in fostering emotional safety and security for individuals with a history of attachment trauma.

Identify how narrative exercises can foster mentalizing among staff, and improve a treatment system’s ability to regulate affect, especially in moments of crisis.

Describe how mentalizing may help staff sustain their own emotional safety, support, and well-being when treating trauma.
