In the terminology of supply chain management, agility refers to a company’s ability to deliver a broad range of high-quality products and services with short lead times and vary¬ing volumes and mixes that provide enhanced value to customers. An agile company is nimble, quick, and alert to changes in its environment that require it to be responsive and to seize its opportunities.

Now more than ever, meaningful supply chain transformation is critical to the success of organizations. But far too often, supply chain transformations sputter and fail, leaving behind a trail of broken initiatives, angry suppliers, disappointed customers, and demotivated employees. Only by successfully embedding the processes necessary for transformation will organizations make the leap to true competitiveness with agile supply chains.

This presentation explores agility from a variety of angles. Dr. Lee discusses how and where agile opportunities are likely to appear, how to recognize them, and what to do about them. He considers the entire end-to-end supply chains (from suppliers’ suppliers to customers’ customers) in the search for opportunities and needs for agile capabilities.

This presentation is based on two of Dr. Lee’s books that touch on the subject of agility: Creating Entrepreneurial Supply Chains: A Guide to Innovation and Growth, 2012, and Leading Effective Supply Chain Transformations: A Guide to Sustainable World-Class Capability and Results, 2010, both by J. Ross Publishing. Both of these books are focused on how companies can be transformed to become more agile, innovative, and competitive.

Dr. Bill Lee is a certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management and a Certified Management consultant.
