Event Details

On October 27th from 9am-5pm TGI and The National Peace Academy will team up to offer Transforming Power: Ways of Transforming Ourselves and the Prison System, Here and Around the World. This learning event is a special journey that takes participants through the early history of the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) to its current international status. It will examine the countries and communities that currently offer AVP in their prisons, communities and schools, and will offer particpants the opportunity to experience a variety of AVP exercises, reflect on these experiences and discuss their responses in a supportive community circle. The exercises invite attendees to explore who we are, what we believe, how we can respond to our needs non-violently, and how we can express ourselves using such skills as nonviolent communication. Participants will also be introduced to the concept of Transforming Power and conclude their journey with a greater understanding of AVP, its history, structure and how to participate in future full-length programs both nationally and internationally.

This one day intensive will take place on October 27th at The Graduate Institute and is facilitated by Dr. Barbara Thorngren. There will be a $50.00 charge for non-TGI colleagues. Dr. Thorngren is the former Chair of the Education Department and Program Coordinator for the Peace & Social Justice Program at Nashua Community College, a program that includes service learning projects with people experiencing homelessness, and participatory workshops at the NH State Prison for men, where Dr. Thorngren also serves as the Volunteer Program Coordinator for the Alternatives to Violence Project workshops. Please email Dr. Lisa Worth-Huber at huber@learn.edu for additional information.
