Overview

Researchers and agencies broadly separate widely deployed vehicle detector technologies into two categories: “Intrusive/In-Roadway” Sensors, and “Non-Intrusive/Over the Roadway” Sensors. A third category of detector technology that is beginning to gain traction includes “Probe Measure Technologies”. This Tech Transfer Seminar will provide an overview of the technologies, with respect to data collection for arterials by considering numerous aspects of each technology, including the type of data collected, data accuracy, ease of calibration, ease of maintenance, application at intersections vs. street segments, cost, and a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of each technology. This seminar will mainly focus on the latest developements in the “Non-Intrusive/Over the Roadway” and “Probe Measure Technologies”. Some common topics covered in the presentations are: quality assurance and control of collected data; data documentation – metadata; data preservation – archiving, file formats, precision, data sharing; and technology comparison/selection, including some project examples from the Bay Area.
