With a population of about 23 million, Australia has proven to be an appealing and profitable market for American companies for many years. It offers very few barriers to entry, a familiar legal and corporate framework, and a sophisticated – yet straightforward business culture. While it is important to understand and appreciate Australia’s cultural differences, the long and successful history of American firms in Australia suggests that other U.S. companies will also find this market to be rewarding and attractive. There are significant opportunities for Washington state companies in an array of sectors that include:
- Australia has the third highest vehicle ownership rate tin the world
- The US is the leading source of aftermarket parts supply
- According to the ITA, there are 3,800 Australian students studying in the United States,
- Interest by Australian undergraduates in sports scholarship opportunities is common, as is a one semester exchange. Often the pursuit of a U.S. course by an undergraduate is a direct result of affiliation between the American and Australian university.

About our Speaker
Joseph B. Kaesshaefer, Jr. is Counselor for Commercial Affairs for the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia, and Wellington, New Zealand, and works from the U.S. Consulate in Sydney. Prior to his current post at the Embassy in Camberra, Joe served as the Commercial Counselor for the U.S. Embassies in Jakarta, Indonesia; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Vienna, Austria. From 1994 to 1998, Joe served as the Commercial Consul at the U.S. Consulate, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In 1993 and 1994, Joe worked in Paris, France at both the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Commercial Service office at the U.S. Embassy. From 1987 to 1993, Joe acted as a Trade Specialist in the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. Prior to joining the Department of Commerce, Joe worked for a travel assistance firm in their London, England, and Washington, D.C. offices, and for two U.S. Senators as a junior aide.
