On Saturday July, 20th, 2013, the International Institute for the Bengal and Himalayan Basins (IIBHB), a nonprofit organization located in Berkeley, California, will hold its 4thAnnual Townes and Tagore Seminar on the Global Water Crisis. The event draws its name from Rabindranath Tagore, the Bengali poet and 1913 Nobel Laureate in Literature, and  Dr. Charles Hard Townes, the inventor of the laser and cofounder of the IIBHB. Professor Townes is the 1964 Nobel Laureate in Physics, 1999 recipient of India’s Rabindranath Tagore Award, and 2005 Templeton Laureate, who in 2003 delivered the Birla and Schrödinger Lectures.

This seminar is at the same time a celebration of Prof. Townes’ 98th birthday and Mr. Tagore’s 152nd anniversary.  Dr. Steven Chu, former US Secretary of Energy, will deliver this year's keynote speech. Also speaking will be Dr. Douglas Osheroff of Stanford University, the 1996 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Dr. David Presti of U.C. Berkeley, Christoper Edley, JD,MPP of U.C. Berkeley Law and Dr. Rashbihari Ghosh, prominent Bangladeshi-American scientist, cofounder of the IIBHB,  and Charles H.
