Description

Please join The Foreign Policy Institute (FPI) for the launch of FPI Fellow, Deepti Choubey's report Toward Disarmament Securely: Clarifying the Nuclear Security and Disarmament Link.

Choubey provides the landscape of views from nuclear-armed and non-nuclear-weapon states on the relationship between nuclear security (measures to prevent nuclear terrorism) and nuclear disarmament (measures to reduce and eliminate nuclear weapons). She examines the connections made between the two concepts and identifies several hidden assumptions that if left unaddressed run the risk of undermining support for the global nuclear security mission, setting unrealistic expectations about the practical aspects of disarmament, and hindering progress on both agendas.

Her analysis is based on independent research and interviews of officials and diplomats responsible for and knowledgeable about nuclear security and disarmament from 17 of the 53 (including a variety across nuclear-armed and non-nuclear weapons states) countries that participate in the Nuclear Security Summits.

Choubey suggests recommendations relevant for the 2016 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference and for the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit. This study is the latest publication of the FPI Policy Briefs series initiated in the 1980s.

The launch will take place on Thursday, April 23 from 1PM - 2:30PM at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Rome Auditorium located in then Rome Building (1619 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC).
