Cereal boxes and chip bags are quick to tout themselves as “fat-free” or “heart healthy,” but they rarely flaunt the hazardous amounts of sugars and trans fats within.
This outdated method of thinking prevents North Americans from truly understanding what constitutes quality nutrition and renders label reading—an otherwise intelligent decision—nearly useless.
On Saturday, February 22nd, 2014, our team of doctors will host the life-changing Total Food Makeover: A Weight Loss Challenge event. The event will help attendees understand why the standard, grain-heavy North American diet makes losing weight nearly impossible. In addition to a fully-outlined 30-day weight loss challenge, attendees will be taught the lifestyle habits to help them manage weight, increase their energy levels and even alleviate emotional stress.
At the Total Food Makeover, we will work to dispel common misunderstandings of basic nutrients, including these four all-too-common nutritional myths:
- If our parents had heart disease, then we will, too.
- Fat in food makes us fat.
- Fat in meats causes heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and kidney disease.
- Cholesterol causes heart disease.
These myths are so often repeated that they are almost universally believed to be true. Reading nutrition labels will make little difference without understanding how food impacts the human body.
