If you already know what you want to build and how you want to build it, and you just want to learn how to use the tools you need safely or need a refresher, Tool Training sessions are for you! 

In this session, learn about how to fuse steel together using the most common type of welder, in a short format class that will have you ready to safely operate the equipment and ready to get started on your own project or practice on your own. This class will cover tool safety and personal protective equipment, MIG welder set up and troubleshooting, how to join steel plates and tubes, weld patterns, and joint set up. After this training session, you will have the basics of MIG welding and be ready to do your own metal fabrication out of steel plates or tubes.

Class Goals:

Skills students will acquire or refresh:
MIG Welder set up and beginner troubleshooting
MIG welder puddle control and passable welding
Appropriate safety measures for welder use and welding shop use.


Students must be at least 18 years old.

Materials Provided:

Practice materials will be provided by Artisan's Asylum.

What to Bring:

Hair ties for long hair, closed-toed shoes, long-sleeve shirt.

MIG Welder tool training sessions are available at a variety of days/times, on alternate weeks, 7:00 to 9:00pm. You can register for a particular session according to the dates on the ticket types above.

Instructor Biography:

Paul Carson is an engineer by training and metalworking enthusiast.  After years of making bicycle powered sculptures, a recumbent trike, gas powered bumper cars and other contraptions, he designed his own bicycle building process using the fixture and manufacturing process design skills he learned working as a manufacturing engineer.

REFUNDS: We offer full refunds for any class cancellations more than three days in advance of the class start date. After that point refunds are contingent upon the Asylum being able to fill the seat. No refunds whatsoever are offered for same-day cancellations. To request a refund for a class, please fill out this form.

CANCELLATIONS: Your class may be cancelled if too few people register. A decision will be made a few days before the class is scheduled to run, and you will be notified of the cancellation and your registration refunded in full.
