Tool Training for Jewelry in the Hot Craft Studio: Students will learn the proper use and location of all the tools in the studio and to operate the acetylene gas tank, set up a soldering area, turn on and off the tank, use the polishing set up, the rolling mill, and the flex shaft.
Tool Testing will follow two weeks after training or by appointment with the shop monitor, and is necessary before a member is allowed to work independently in the shop.

No experience required. Students must be at least 18 years old.
All necessary materials will be provided, and are included in the cost of registration!

Karen Christians is an educator and maker in the metal arts. She developed the metals program at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, founded Metalwerx in Waltham, a non-profit school for jewelry and the metal arts, and the new jewelry section of the Hot Craft Studio at Artisans Asylum in Somerville. She teaches nationally, lectures around the country, and is published in many professional and technical magazines. She is the author of the book, Making the Most of Your Flex-Shaft. Karen holds a BFA with High Honors from the Massachusetts College of Art. She is currently writing a second book which was successfully funded on Kickstarter this spring, The Jewelry of the Playa: Making, Collecting, and Gifting at Burning Man.
Registration reserves one spot for existing Artisan's Asylum members in a single Jewelry Shop tool training session on a Wednesday. You will be contacted by the instructor to schedule a specific time and time. Registration includes the cost of all materials used.
REFUNDS: We offer full refunds for any class cancellations more than three days in advance of the class start date. After that point refunds are contingent upon the Asylum being able to fill the seat. No refunds whatsoever are offered for same-day cancellations. CANCELLATIONS: Your class may be cancelled if too few people register. A decision will be made a few days before the class is scheduled to run, and you will be notified of the cancellation and your registration refunded in full.
