Event Details

Stew is the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter who wrote and starred in the ground-breaking Broadway rock musical, Passing Strange. He was nominated and won lots of awards for this, including Broadway's highest honor, the Tony Award. Director Spike Lee loved Stew's play so much that he filmed the final performances. Stew, his play (and the film) received tons of rave reviews just like these...

4 Out of 4 Stars! One of the best musicals I've seen...The music is moving and exciting not only because of book, music and performances, but because of its intelligence, passion and heart! -Roger Ebert (RIP)

In every way a knockout! Stew's voice, which can twist from mellow to shout without missing a nuance, is a distinct pleasure. - Rolling Stone

There’s never been a musical quite like “Passing Strange.” ...Stew’s autobiographical art-rock creation. “Strange” is a rocker-as-artist-coming-of-age story emerging, like some wondrous new life form, from the psychedelic cocoon of a particularly tuneful, varied, soulful and witty rock concert. - San Francisco Chronicle

Call it a rock concert with a story to tell...Call it a sprawling work of performance art... I'll just call it wonderful! - New York Times

5 Stars! Bears comparison not just to the great works of the American musical theater but to literary landmarks. Passing Strange is a work of genius. - Box Office Magazine

Players By The Sea in Jax Beach is producing their own version of Stew's Tony award winning play, with performances running from April 12th to May 4th.  To celebrate their landmark production, Players By The Sea and Atypical Arts have joined together to bring STEW and his band, The Negro Problem, to Jacksonville to perform in a very special, not-to-be-missed, live concert event!

ATYPICAL ARTS PRESENTS

ATYPICAL means out-of-the ordinary and that’s exactly what we’re bringing to Jacksonville. Our plan is simple - present great artists (many who rarely, if ever, tour this way) in a unique, environment that allows for a very friendly, casual interaction between the artist and audience.

Atypical Arts Presents producer Jimmy Saal has a long and varied resume in the music business, having worked on-staff for over 10 years at both Vibe & Spin Magazines, Central Park SummerStage, Lincoln Center Festival and MJI Broadcasting (managing production for numerous broadcast events at the Grammy and Country Music Awards).  It’s that experience, combined with friendships with lots of incredible artists, that allows us to create unique music events.

We have a lot of really cool events coming up, so be sure follow us online.
