Event Details

TOGETHER: A #CoPresence4Good Camp: Saturday 9/28, 10:00-5:00, IFTF

What if you could ‘walk in the shoes’ of a Syrian refugee? Or be part of a live protest in Russia against LGBT rights abuses? Or be part of the live video 'panic button' team for an activist at risk? How would that transform your understanding and ability to act and how could it be useful to people facing situations of great challenge?

At TOGETHER: A #Copresence4Good Camp we’ll look at how to harness the potential of experiential, real-time, synchronous witnessing, learning, and engagement for human rights activism, news reporting and general social goodness. How does the power to 'walk in someone's shoes', to see through others' eyes, and to be part of live, interactive and immersive witnessing drive concrete, productive actions, engagement and understanding across borders and timezones. Together we’ll conceptualize, share and hack provocative tech prototypes and tactical/design ideas.

Journalists, human rights activists, designers, techies and anyone who cares about social good are all welcome! ‘Together’ is linked to the ‘Future for Good’ Fellowship program at Institute for the Future and supported by the human rights group WITNESS.

We’ll engage with:

  • What are the potential human rights usages of new visual media technologies of wearable computing, telepresence, live video, immersive video and co-presence?
  • Once we can see in real-time what is happening in a human rights situation (a forced eviction, a suppressed Pride rally, a protest), experience it through others' eyes, and feel a real sense of presence in another location, how do we use that to drive human rights action and engage more people in relevant, useful activity?
  • What are the actions we can generate based on synchronous co-presence: for preventative pressure, for persuasive pressure, for conflict resolution, for rapid reaction, for distributed sense-making, for building shared understanding/solidarity and empathy?
  • How do we grapple with key ethical questions of privacy, voyeurism and a possible over-emphasis on crisis moments and first-person experience?

For more information on the project explore the project Tumblr and read this blog!

For an draft outline on the day check out our Camp page

Interested in participating remotely or participating in a co-presence experiment from elsewhere during the day? Check the 'remote co-presence' ticket box and we'll be in touch with some options!

There’ll be facilities, power, food, and refreshments. Lunch is provided. Just bring your laptop, ideas, and enthusiasm to work on future-thinking and creating for social good and human right activism.

Supported by:

1) What does the plan for the day look like? Check out the draft here. Feedback welcome!

2) Interested but need to learn more? Take a look at the project Tumblr and the blog or contact Sam.

3) Need to contact the organizers? Use the contact form on the event-page or contact Sam at sgregory at fellows.iftf.org.

4) Do I need to reserve a space? Yes please - since we need to track attendee numbers and we'll be buying lunch!

5) Do I need to print a ticket? No need.

6) How do I get to the Institute for the Future? There's the Palo Alto Caltrain stop three minutes walk away and nearby parking.

7) Do I need a background in activism, human rights, news or tech to come? All welcome - just come with ideas and a passion for thinking about how we improve the world.

8) Can I participate if I'm not able to make it physically to Palo Alto? We're looking for ways to have an active co-presence element during the day both for participation in discussions, but also for possible co-presence experiments. Check the 'remote co-presence' ticket box for this and we'll be in touch!
