Dr. Rosie Valdez, Heir Apparent and International Court Council Member, would like to invite you to a VIP party prior to the screening of “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar” in honor of Jose Julio Sarria International Scholarship Fund.
Who was Jose Julio Sarria? – Jose Julio Sarria was an American political activist from San Francisco, California who, in 1961, became the first openly gay candidate for public office in the United States. He is also remembered as a performer (Female Impersonator) at the Black Cat Bar and as the founder of the Imperial Court System.
Sarria and members of the Imperial Court appeared along with other notable female impersonators in the 1995 film “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar”. They played the judges of the "Drag Queen of the Year Contest" that opened the film.
On August 19, 2013 Jose Sarria died leaving behind a legacy of almost 50 years which is the International Court System. In September, at the Coronation held in Washington, DC, Queen Mother Nicole proclaimed the start of the Jose Julio Sarria Scholarship and named a committee to begin working on raising funds and managing the distribution. On December 12th, Jose Sarria would be 91 years old. It was the intention of this member to raise funds for the Jose Julio Sarria International Scholarship and celebrate his birthday because many friends and allies in the LGBT community have many of their liberties because of many things he accomplished.
