Dr. Robert Campbell, M.D., co-creator of the original Titanium Rib

Dr. Melvin Smith, M.D., co-creator of the original Titaniun Rib

Lori Buegeler, RN of Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital

In 1987, the late Dr. Melvin D. Smith, pediatric general surgeon, consulted with Dr. Robert M. Campbell, Jr., pediatric orthopedic surgeon, regarding an infant with severe congenital absence of ribs and scoliosis.  Without intervention, the infant was expected to die so Dr. Campbell and Dr. Smith designed a chest wall prosthesis made of fracture pins.  The infant’s scoliosis decreased and the child was weaned from the ventilator.

While the chest wall prosthesis worked better than expected, a new dilemma was faced as the doctors realized that the implant would not grow as the child grew.  To solve this dilemma, Dr. Campbell designed the first titanium rib implant as a custom prosthesis.  The fracture pins were replaced with two titanium ribs at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio as a historical first in 1989.  After a 14-year FDA study, the titanium rib, also known as “VEPTR” (Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib) was approved by the FDA in 2004 as a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) and is now approved worldwide.

Founded in 2004, the Titanium Rib Foundation was established to assist children with skeletal abnormalities, many of whom require surgery two or more times per year, and their families in their time of need.  The Titanium Rib Foundation is a nonprofit 501c (3) organization that is also called to realize the full potential for independence, productivity and inclusion in the community for these children.

In honor of Dr. Campbell’s and Dr. Smith’s tireless efforts in support of children with rare spine and chest wall disorders, the Titanium Rib Foundation is sponsoring the 25th Anniversary Titanium Rib Gala.   The gala will be held at the Briscoe Western Art Museum at 6:00pm on Friday, August 16, 2013 in San Antonio, Texas.  Honorees are Dr. Robert Campbell, Lori Buegeler, RN, Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and Dr. Melvin Smith, posthumously recognized.

Titanium Rib Foundation

The Titanium Rib Foundation is a designated non-profit organization with 501c3 status granted by the IRS.  TRF supports children with VEPTR implants and their families.  We annually support over 500 children who struggle to breathe because of their thoracic insufficiency.  Children from all across the United States and abroad travel to San Antonio, Texas to undergo surgery twice a year.  There are other VEPTR programs around the country and Rib Kids spread throughout the world.  We are so grateful for your willingness to donate your money and resources to assist us in providing assistance to families whose children undergo an invasive surgery usually two times a year.
