Workshop “Pioneers in Maritime Technology"

As part of its aim to promote hydrography and to create opportunities to exchange experience and knowledge between its members and others who are interested, the Hydrographic Society Benelux (HSB) organises regularly (6-7 times/year) workshops on topics of interest for its members.
The HSB emphasises that all those who are interested are more than heartily welcome, also non-members!
The Europort exhibition, together with the parallel conferences, such as the CEDA-Dredging Forum, is of interest to hydrographic surveyors and to those working in the related industries and government organisations.
Europort, therefore, offers a great opportunity to combine a visit to Europort and to attend a workshop of the HSB. The day of the workshop Europort has late opening hours (10.00 – 22.00 hrs) thereby offering time to visit the exhibition during lunch break and after the drinks.
The day is filled with Workshops presented by representatives of companies with an exhibition stand at Europort 2013. All companies are leading pioneers and innovators in their own field.
Some speakers will describe a specific product in more detail, others will update the various users about the status of the latest technologies.
All together an interesting mix and surely there will be at least a few items of your interest to listen in during a visit to Europort 2013!

10:05 – 10:45 The use of AUV’s for Hydrographic Surveying

In de hydrographic world an AUV is a new platform which has a growing interest in this business.
It is a stable and reliable tool where the customer can install a variety of sensors like multibeams, sidescan sonar, magnetometer, USBL, sniffers and much more. It is important these sensors producing clean data and the range of Kongsberg sensors are made for it.The Hugin and the Remus with EM2040(C) and/or HISAS side scan sonar on board is a common and reliable concept and in combination with Hipap USBL or LBL positioning Kongsberg has the perfect combination for hydrographic measurements which we will inform you with this presentation.
10:45 – 11:15 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) update

The demand for greater positioning accuracy with more reliability for waterways and marine positioning is aided with more satellite availability. While GPS from USA, and GLONASS from Russia, have been the mainstay of GNSS for the last few years we have seen three new constellations – QZSS from Japan, BeiDou (Compass) from China and GALILEO from Europe.
This presentation reviews the current status of all the GNSS constellations. Other new developments which will be touched briefly;
-Updated Geoid Model EGM-96,
-Due to doubling of the number of satellites, the corrections needed for precise GNSS, have also doubled so a new correction format is explained.
Furthermore we will tell you something about the latest RTX service (corrections over satellite) and xFILL technology (maintaining your positioning after you lose your GNSS signal).
11:15 – 12:00 Inertial FOG and acoustic aiding references for Dynamic Positioning applications

With DP-PHINS, iXBlue has expanded the functionality of its industry-leading PHINS inertial navigation system (INS).
The new DP-PHINS is designed to interface with any third-party acoustic positioning equipment to provide INS-enhanced acoustic data input to marine dynamic positioning (DP) systems. Additionally DP-PHINS can also take data from a range of other sensors, some not normally associated with DP, such as Doppler velocity logs (DVL), for use in maintaining vessel position.
Using DP-PHINS with INS produces positioning data that is smoother, more accurate and is updated at a higher rate. Consequently, station-keeping performance is significantly improved, vessels use less fuel, and wear and tear on the DP system components is reduced.
The system has been fully qualified at sea with industry leaders operating in West Africa O&G development field.

Seabat Multibeam systems latest technologies and applications

Teledyne-RESON develops innovative technologies for Offshore, Survey and Dredge markets. This paper explains the latest technologies and applications in which they may be used.
In the presentation the following topics will be explained and shown.
The latest models of SeaBat systems are capable of generating Frequency Modulated pulses for improved depth performance and resolution. This reduces the impact of ambient noise in the water column and results in a more robust detection of the seafloor.
It improves the data significantly minimizing the processing time even further.
Teledyne-RESON has developed an algorithm to automatically detect and track pipelines in the multibeam swath. It outputs the standard 5 points pipeline information in real-time consisting of top of pipe, mean seabed and seabed next to the pipe. The output can be sent to data acquisition and processing software for further analysis, including free-span detection. Pipelines with 40 cm diameter are detected and tracked at a waterdepth of 200 meter.
A further development is to display the real-time water column data in the multibeam display. Water column data reveals items of interest which may be difficult to detect in digitized depths, such as poles, and small details on wrecks. The real-time water column shows the history of the data in the along-track and across-track directions. Water column data may be output to any hydrographic software such as PDS2000 to be further processed.
15:15 – 16:00 The use of Remotely Operated Vehicles for Hydrographic Surveys

Remotely operated boats offer convenience for hydrographic surveyors conducting shallow water inshore bathymetric surveys. Oceanscience Z-Boat 1800 offers a “turn key” solution and is particularly suited for fast and convenient volume surveys in industrial water storage ponds, tailing ponds, construction sites or hazardous locations. Instead of mobilizing a manned boat for a small survey area, simply launch the Z- boat and start surveying immediately. A single operator can conduct a survey at a much lower cost than a full survey crew. In addition, safety is maintained by not having personnel on the water.
